Murphy’s Mocktail Mule: The Recipe You Asked For

SHARE NOW

Listener Allison sent us a Facebook message. Murphy had mentioned his mocktail mule on the air, so she bought the ingredients, then couldn’t remember how he makes it. She’s also looking for good drinks for fall. Here’s Murphy’s method, written down so nobody has to remember it.

What you need

Ginger beer. This is the main ingredient. Murphy uses a zero-sugar version.
Lime juice. Just a splash.
A little sweetness (optional). Simple syrup works, or a splash of grenadine for a pomegranate-style sweetness.

How Murphy makes it

Pour the ginger beer into a glass.
Add a splash of lime juice.
Taste it. If it’s too sharp, add a little simple syrup or grenadine.

The sweetener matters more than you’d think. Ginger and lime are both tart, and a touch of sugar balances them out.

How he found it

Murphy first ordered one off a menu on a family trip to New York with Jodi and their daughters. He’d never had the cocktail version, a Moscow mule. He says he didn’t even know ginger beer existed until then.

What sold him is how strong it is. “You only take sips of it,” he says. That makes it a drink you sit with, not one you guzzle.

Good to know

Despite the name, most ginger beer is a soft drink with no alcohol. Some brands do make an alcoholic version, so check the label if you’re keeping it alcohol-free.

Jodi’s tip from the same segment: even plain sparkling water looks fancy poured into a nice glass. Hers was raspberry nectarine.
