TODAY IN 1990: “Pretty Woman” premieres – with ONE BIG FAKE OUT!

Today in 1990, one of the QUINTESSENTIAL rom-coms that set the standard for movies in the ’90s and ’00s first premiered in theaters.  Starring the relatively unknown 23-year old Julia Roberts, and (the “considered by many to be washed up”) Richard Gere, the “hooker with a heart of gold” plotline was panned by critics IMMEDIATELY.

Critics, though, don’t buy movie tickets: us regular people do.  And for the past 33 years, we’ve LOVED every moment of it!

As we look back at one of the most nostalgic items of the film, however, there’s one part of the film’s promotion that most of us never knew.  The iconic cover?

That’s not Julia Roberts’ body.  OR Richard Gere’s, for that matter!

Both were plastered onto other body frames through one of the earliest versions of Photoshop.  After all, check Richard’s hair; it was certainly darker in this picture than the movie.

It just comes to show, that even 33 years ago, not everything is always QUITE as it seems.

And if that isn’t a lesson about the characters in “Pretty Woman,” what is?
